Science
Asexual reproduction
The process where a single parent reproduces by itself, its offspring are identical. Asexual reproduction is when an organism makes a copy of itself without needing a mate.
Diploid
A cell that has two sets of chromosomes. Diploid. In simple terms, diploid means a cell contains two full sets of chromosomes, one set from each parent.
Egg
The haploid sex cell formed by female reproductive organs. An egg is a female reproductive cell that, when fertilized by a sperm, can develop into a new organism.
Embryo
An organism in its early stages of development. Embryo. An embryo is the initial stage of growth for a living being after fertilization, forming the basic structures of the organism.
Fertilization
When a male reproductive cell sperm joins with a female reproductive cell egg, fertilization occurs. Fertilization is the process where sperm and egg unite to form a new organism.
Genotype
The entire genetic make up of an organism. Genotype. A genotype is the set of genes in an organism's DNA that determines its traits.
Haploid
A cell that has only one set of chromosomes. Haploid. In simple terms, haploid refers to cells, like sperm and egg cells, that contain just one complete set of chromosomes.
Meiosis
The process in cell division where the number of chromosomes is halved. Meiosis. Meiosis is when cells divide to make sex cells, like sperm and eggs, each with half the usual number of chromosomes.
Phenotype
The observable characteristics of an organism. Phenotype. A phenotype is the set of visible traits or characteristics of an organism, like height and eye color, that result from the interaction of its genes and the environment.
Probability
The likelihood that an event will occur. Probability. In Science, probability is a way to measure how likely it is for something to happen or be true.
Regeneration
The ability to regrow missing body parts. Regeneration. Regeneration is the process by which certain organisms regrow lost or damaged tissues or organs.
Sexual reproduction
The production of offspring from two parents. Sexual reproduction. It is a process where two parents combine their genetic material to create a new organism.
Sperm
The sex cell produced in male reproductive organs. Sperm is a male reproductive cell that carries genetic information necessary for fertilization.
Testes
The male reproductive organs that produce sperm and testosterone are called testes. Testes are small, egg-shaped glands in men that make sperm and hormones like testosterone.
Trait
Any characteristic of an organism trait. In science, a trait is a specific feature or quality of a living thing, like eye color or height.
Zygote
The cell formed when a sperm fertilizes an egg is called a zygote. A zygote is the first cell of a new organism, containing genetic material from both parents.
